The movement of people from one country to another has led to more than just the appearance of the world becoming smaller. It has also resulted in the increase of the number of languages that are spoken in any given arena, which necessitates the use of translators.

Convenience

Prior to the creation of translation software for use with PCs and smartphones, it was necessary to rely on a bilingual person to act as a translator. However, depending on the circumstances, this could prove to be inconvenient when translation services are immediately required. While this problem could be solved by translating over the phone, this may not always be convenient or possible, such as with a poor connection. Having software that allows someone to speak into a phone or microphone in order to immediately translate what is said will aid efficiency and prevent delays. Lost in translation – a review of the popular Bill Murray movie

Directed by Sofia Coppola, Lost In Translation is an American film starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, which was released in 2003. A review of Lost In Translation can offer an idea of what to expect from the dramatic movie, which also demonstrates both humorous and romantic elements, and help to guide the decision on whether it is worth watching.

Plot

In Lost In Translation, Bill Murray plays Bob, a once well-known movie actor who is past his prime, but still successful enough to be offered a part in an advertisement in Tokyo. Whilst there, he meets Scarlett Johansson’s character, Charlotte, who is staying with her husband in the same hotel as Bob. While Bob’s long marriage is becoming lacklustre, Charlotte’s new marriage concerns her as her celebrity photographer husband seems more interested in his subjects. The two strike up a friendship that benefits them both.

Themes

There are a number of different themes present in Lost In Translation, particularly that which stems from the title. The clash that occurs between American and Japanese cultures is one that is prevalent in the movie, which relates back to the film’s title. In parts of the film, Japanese is spoken without the viewer having the benefit of subtitles, which leaves them in the same position as Bob – relying on what we are told was said, even if it seems not to match. The movie also deals with infidelity, loneliness, insomnia and celebrity.

Review

The relationship that develops between a man going through a midlife crisis and a woman seeking attention is an enthralling one that makes Lost In Translation well-worth watching. Bill Murray’s typical acerbic style present in films, such as Ghostbusters and Scrooge, is tempered to leave a man who is a shadow of his former self who earns pity. The movie is well-acted by Murray and Johansson, the former especially gaining recognition for his ability to portray the steps involved in an illicit, yet pure romance. The movie successfully provides humorous moments without clashing with the underlying dramatic theme. The contrast between the peace and elegance of the hotel and the gaudiness of the arcades presents just some of Japan as a backdrop, which creates a pleasing change of pace. While it is not like an average romantic movie, the manner in which the unusual romance is presented makes for an enjoyable viewing.

PC-based translation software can be useful within certain expectations. When people first get a translation package or software tool to load onto their computer, many have the assumption that the software will automatically convert a foreign document or letter to a perfect format in their home language. For a variety of reasons, this assumption falls flat on its face. However, translation software does have its benefits if used correctly.

If the goal is just to generally understand what someone else has written in a foreign language, translation software can do the job. The translation may come out a bit odd or incorrect, and some words may seem out of context, but the general idea will be fairly understandable a majority of the time.

Perfect Grammar

If the user’s expectation is to get a perfect translation produced with every input, that’s not going to happen. Part of the problem has to do with how languages work versus each other. Depending how the words are organized, a literal translation will look very odd from one language to the other. This is due to different cultural rules of which verbs and nouns go first, second and so on, when writing a sentence.

Free and cheap software packages load stripped down versions of a tool, trying to get the user to buy a full package for the full benefit. More expensive translation software packages come fully developed, including many of the features expected by a customer for the software to work properly.

Compatibility

Users still need to make sure their chosen translation software is compatible. Many problems occur when software that can’t work with a given word processor or text writer program.

There are a wide range of situations in which translation will be required, some of which will require the use of technical language. Anyone seeking to become a translator must consider the types of work they are prepared to undertake, for example, in a police station, hospital or airport. It will be essential to take steps to update skills in order to be able to translate the range of words that may be encountered in these environments.

Employment Status

While there are agencies in existence that are dedicated to providing translators to organisations that require them, it is also possible to be a self-employed translator. There may also be some companies that require a translator on staff, but this type of position will be rare. It is a straightforward tool that can be very useful when dealing with languages that you are unfamiliar with.

Although Google Translate isn’t without flaws, it is the only translation tool of its kind. The software used to create this translator was developed by IBM researchers in the 1980s.
